Deployment of a Low Cost “Train-to-Earth” Wireless Communications Architecture to Enable Added Value Services in the Railway Industry

VTC (), 2010 (), p.,
.,, 2010

Nowadays the quality of the service offered to passengers is becoming a very important value in the railway industry, apart from priority services related to the safe operation of the railway system. In order to achieve this, moving some intelligence from the Ground Control Centers to the trains is needed. This paper describes a low cost train-to-earth communication architecture, based on the new generation of standard wireless technologies. This communication framework aims to complement traditional railway communication systems and make the deployment of new services, such as passenger oriented services, possible. At present, this architecture is being deployed in real railway environments, whose behaviour will be described as well.
